Starlight Teachers Honored with 12 News AwardPosted on 08/21/2019On August 9th, 12 News anchor Trisha Hendricks surprised dual language teachers Victoria Gonzales and Brenda Espinoza with the 12 News A+ Teachers of the Week Award. The Starlight Park teachers were honored to receive the award, they were all smiles. Principal Dr. Felicia Durden said the two are deserving because they volunteered to pilot the first dual language immersion program at Cartwright - and they've worked hard to get the program off the ground.
This is the first year of the program that teaches kindergarteners in both English and Spanish. Gonzales was named the ELL Teacher of the Year in 2015. Espinoza was the runner-up. Espinoza handles the Spanish instruction and said it's difficult to wrap her brain around the fact that she can now speak Spanish to her students all day long. Previously, Gonzales was a 1st grade teacher but she has taught kindergarten in the past.
The women also received flowers from 12 News and a round of congratulations or "felicidades" from their students and fellow staff members.
