In second grade, our students will be focusing their learning in math on skip-counting by 5’s and 10’s, adding and subtracting up to 20, and learning the difference between odd and even. Students will also begin to add two-digit numbers. Students will begin to identify and count money including coins and dollar bills. We begin to teach our students how to graph real-world situations and use their knowledge of math to answer questions. Our students will be able to identify and group shapes by their characteristics. In reading our students will learn to read independently and proficiently to understand a variety of literature from multiple cultures. They will learn to identify the main idea of a multi-paragraph text, including what an author wants to explain, describe or answer. Our students will learn to read and spell irregular and pattern-based words using proper manuscript letter formation. They will begin writing opinion, explanatory and narrative pieces.
