First Grade
In first grade, our students will learn a lot in math. They will add and subtract within 20. They will answer word problems by adding and subtracting and using the plus, minus, and equal signs. Students will also begin to learn to measure various items, using units such as feet and inches. This will also be the first time students are introduced to telling time. In reading our students will be able to recognize and orally manipulate sounds in words. They learn to blend sounds to read written words with accuracy and fluency. They will learn to apply their phonetic knowledge to correctly spell words. They will learn to ask and answer questions when they read the text, and they will be able to retell stories and to write a story with sequenced events and details.
