Girl reading book
  • Second Grade

In second grade, our students focus their learning in math on skip-counting by 5’s and 10’s, adding and subtracting up to 20, and learning the difference between odd and even.  Students will also begin to add two-digit numbers.  Students will begin to identify and count money including coins and dollar bills.  We begin to teach our students how to graph real-world situations and use their knowledge of math to answer questions.  Our students are taught to identify and group shapes by their characteristics. In reading our students learn to read independently and proficiently to understand a variety of literature from multiple cultures. They learn to identify the main idea of a multi-paragraph text, including what an author wants to explain, describe or answer.  Our students learn to read and spell irregular and pattern-based words using proper manuscript letter formation. And they begin to write opinion, explanatory and narrative pieces.
