Sunset School was built in 1961 and was the fifth school to open in the Cartwright School District. The original school colors were orange and yellow but they were changed to blue and yellow by the school choir director. She didn't want the kids to have to wear either color as a choir shirt so she bought blue and yellow shirts and the colors changed. In 2012 the school was remodeled and at that time we again added orange to our colors.
One of the original grandchildren of R.J. Cartwright (founder of the school district) taught at Sunset for more than 30 years. She has since retired, but her daughter now teaches here.
