Tomahawk is one of the few schools in the Cartwright School District district not named after a person. It opened its doors to students in 1979 and is considered a neighborhood school with a strong Block Watch group which supports the school annually. Tomahawk is in the center of the Tomahawk Village Community in Maryvale. Fifty years ago, mostly military families lived in Tomahawk Village. Named after Tomahawk school, the community is a one square mile radius bordered by 75th and 83rd Avenues, Indian School and Camelback Roads, with a little over 2,500 homes.
