Students from Glenn L. Downs Social Sciences Academy recently embarked on an educational journey to Washington, D.C., deepening their understanding of American democracy through immersive, real-world experiences.
The trip included visits to key landmarks such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, multiple Smithsonian museums, and the Library of Congress, where students engaged with historic documents and cultural treasures that brought classroom lessons to life.
A highlight of the visit was a special invitation from Arizona U.S. Representative Yassamin Ansari, who welcomed the group to attend a live congressional committee meeting. This firsthand look at the legislative process offered students a rare opportunity to witness national governance in action.
Additional stops at the U.S. Capitol and the White House further enriched students’ understanding of the federal government’s structure and function.
The trip reflected the academy’s mission to cultivate informed, active citizens. By connecting textbook knowledge with real-world civic experiences, students gained a deeper appreciation for the principles and institutions that shape our nation.
