Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) 

STEM Department Mission and Vision:

The mission of the PLC and STEM Department is to focus on continuous improvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and preparing all students for high-school and beyond.

Our vision is to become the essence of who we are as an educational community, committed to continuous improvement where every child has equal access to all content areas to ensure that all students are college and career ready. We aspire to develop 21st-century skills where the integration of technology is a natural part of the instructional day.

Jane ArdellJane Ardell
STEM Director

Jane Ardell is proud to be working at the Cartwright School District again. She served as Glenn L. Down’s Assistant Principal from 2007-2010. Jane has worked in the Washington Elementary School District and served as principal at Alta Vista Elementary School. She received her Principal’s Certificate from Northern Arizona University in 2010. She secured her Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in ESL from San Francisco State University in 2005. She has taught Early Childhood mathematics and social studies to student teachers at ASU. She believes in the power of STEM and uses her skills and knowledge to support our school district in the implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. 

Deborah KuenzliDeborah Kuenzli
Assistant Director of STEM and College and Career

Deborah Kuenzli began her career in education teaching kindergarten in 1992. She taught kindergarten, first, and second grade before becoming an administrator in 2003. Deborah has been employed in the Cartwright School District since July of 2005 when she became the Reading Interventionist at Heatherbrae Elementary School. In 2006, she became the assistant principal at Peralta Elementary School where she worked for seven years. In 2013, she became the principal at Starlight Park Elementary School. In July 2015, she joined the Educational Services department as the Assistant Director of Mathematics and Science.

Deirdre ShetlerDierdre Shelter
STEM Instructional Technology Specialist

Dierdre Shelter is a STEM Instructional Technology Specialist with 13 years of teaching experience in the Cartwright School District in Phoenix, AZ. She taught grades 6-8 in the regular classroom for 5 years before moving to teach middle school technology and STEM classes for 7 years prior to joining the STEM department in Cartwright. She is passionate about teaching both students and teachers on how to use technology in the most responsible, empowering way possible.
