This is the image for the news article titled Dr. Chávez named Superintendent of the YearThe Cartwright School District is honored to announce that our Superintendent, Dr. Jacob A. Chávez has won the AZALAS Superintendent of the Year Award. Dr. Chávez began his tenure as Superintendent of the Cartwright School District in 2011 with a focus to provide a world-class education to the community he serves. Enhancing community involvement and a rigorous academic program is a constant priority. He brought YOU: Your Child’s First Teacher, a program that educates parents on how to help their children succeed and initiated a partnership with Cox Communications to bring free, refurbished computers and discounted Internet service to our families.

Dr. Chávez supported the development of the STEM and College and Career Readiness department. This innovation was created because of a speaker Dr. Chávez brought to the district who shared research that if children are not exposed to the potential of attending college by fourth grade, the possibilities of even planning to attend college declines significantly by high school. As part of the innovation, every year, all 2000 of our 8th-grade students attend an annual college and career kick off at the beginning of their 8th-grade year. Then throughout the year, the 8th-grade students are provided with advanced STEM and College and Career readiness activities.

Additionally, last year, in order to ensure all students have the academic background to pursue their college and career dreams, Dr. Chávez supported the innovation of providing all students in 8th grade take High School Algebra. In partnership with Phoenix Union, if the students passed the AzMERIT Algebra test in the spring, they would earn a credit and be able to start high school with Geometry and the potential for higher levels of math courses. Because of this innovation, our high school Algebra passing rate more than doubled in this first year.

Finally, to ensure our families know the potential for their children, this year, Dr. Chávez has taken an active roll in marketing the district to our community. We are comprised of a 92% Hispanic population and one of our marketing platforms has involved a partnership with Univision. He makes regular appearances on the morning show, Despierta Arizona, to inform families of the opportunities Cartwright provides for students. Dr. Chávez will do whatever it takes to provide opportunities for our students.

Dr. Chávez will receive his award during the annual AZALAS conference on October 28, 2018.
