PLC and STEM Department Mission and Vision:

The mission of the PLC and STEM Department is to model the Professional Learning Communities process and concepts while focusing on continuous improvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and preparing all students for high-school and beyond.

Our vision is for Professional Learning Communities to become the essence of who we are as an educational community, committed to continuous improvement where every child has equal access to all content areas to ensure that all students are college and career ready. We aspire to develop 21st-century skills where the integration of technology is a natural part of the instructional day.

Deborah Kuenzli
Assistant Director of STEM and College and Career
Deborah Kuenzli began her career in education teaching kindergarten in 1992. She taught kindergarten, first, and second grade before becoming an administrator in 2003. Deborah has been employed in the Cartwright School District since July of 2005 when she became the Reading Interventionist at Heatherbrae Elementary School. In 2006, she became the assistant principal at Peralta Elementary School where she worked for seven years. In 2013, she became the principal at Starlight Park Elementary School. In July 2015, she joined the Educational Services department as the Assistant Director of Mathematics and Science.
Ashley Hargrave

Assistant Director of Math and Science
Ashley Hargrave has a variety of teaching experience in grade levels including kindergarten, upper elementary, K-8 math intervention and middle school math. She has also served as an assistant principal at both the middle school and elementary levels before joining Cartwright as the new Assistant Director of Math and Science. Ashley earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Arizona and a Masters of Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. Through the training and mentoring that she received as a Rodel Promising Student Teacher and more recently, a Rodel Aspiring Principal, Ashley discovered her passion for servant leadership in Title I communities. She believes that all learners, regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds, can experience high levels of growth and success. 
Jasmine Cerna
Administrative Specialist
Jasmine Cerna has worked for the Cartwright School District for 3 years. She worked her first two years at John F. Long School and now she is the Administrative Specialist for the STEM and PLC Department in Educational Services. She is originally from Burbank, California but has lived in Arizona for 10 years. She earned her Associates of Applied Science at EMCC and is currently on the waiting list to start the RN-BSN nursing program at GCC/NAU. She enjoys hiking, shopping and traveling with family and friends in her free time.
Chris Johnson
Dr. Chris Johnson
Math Content Specialist
Chris Johnson is a Math Content Specialist with twenty years of classroom experience. Dr. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from Arizona State University; a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix; and just completed his Doctorate in Psychology with an emphasis of cognition and learning from Grand Canyon University. Dr. Johnson believes that teachers play a vital role in the emotional and intellectual development of students. Thus, he is committed to helping the educators he works with to become enthusiastic, creative, and motivated facilitators of student learning who understand the far-reaching impact of their daily work.

STEM Instructional Technology Specialist
Dierdre Shelter is a STEM Instructional Technology Specialist with 13 years of teaching experience in the Cartwright School District in Phoenix, AZ. She taught grades 6-8 in the regular classroom for 5 years before moving to teach middle school technology and STEM classes for 7 years prior to joining the STEM department in Cartwright. She is passionate about teaching both students an teachers how to use technology in the most responsible, empowering way possible.
